Has a nice feel and tunes well. Stays put but the angle of the string from nut to spool is weird and touches the edge of the fretboard not sure if I’ll leave it on my banjo or switch to a worm gear tuner

Bought this tuner to replace a 1:1 friction-peg tuner on a Gold Tone CC-50 banjo. It was very difficult to tune the fifth string with any accuracy, so much so that capo'ing up to the key of A became something I avoided. The new tuner seems to have about a 4:1 ratio that makes tuning very easy.

If you buy this peg, and your banjo has non-tapered pegs, you will need to buy the 5th string peghole reamer that Stewmac offers. It matches the taper of the Waverly peg exactly and makes installation very easy. I was able to remove the old peg by simply pulling it out (it wasn't glued in place). The reamer is then used to carefully enlarge the hole for the new peg, sneaking up on the diameter a little at a time and test fitting the peg often. My Gold Tone has a narrow neck, and the reamer bottomed out on the truss rod before the hole was large enough. I cut off about 3/16" off the bottom of the reamer with a Dremel and cutoff wheel, and was able to ream out the hole the proper diameter.

Note: this reamer is NOT the taper that you'll find in big-box hardware/jhome stores. It also has proper flutes that are shaped and sharpened for cutting wood, not for deburring a hole in metal.

I bought a set of Waverly planetary banjo pegs to replace the pegs on a Chinese-made banjo I bought. The original pegs worked okay, but their appearance left a lot to be desired -- at least to my sense of aesthetics. I bought this 5th string peg as well, to make the set complete. I briefly considered replacing only the knob, but a Waverly-pattern knob didn't fit the factory tuner. In addition, the factory tuners were chrome plated, while the Waverlys are nickel plated, which I prefer.
With all that background blather out of the way, what about the important question: how does it work? Very well. The action is smooth and reliable. Its planetary gear design is a bit more compact than the more common worm-gear 5th string tuners, which makes playing up on the 4th-6th frets (more or less) a trifle easier.

Needed a new 5th string tuner after the stock Gotoh tuner failed during a gig. I no longer worry about not being in tune mid set. Very reliable. Looks better too.

I love this tuner, Works great, very small, has minimal interference with thumb. Round, compact design, very smooth. Best of all the string end can not protrude from the tuner, as others do, and tear you up. Very fast and easy to change string, just line up the opening, put the string through, allow about a half inch to stick out, and wind. Your done. I recently bought a 5th string tuner for a vintage banjo- it was a great product, but ultimately, it wasn't the right fit for this banjo.
My review, however, is for Stewart-MacDonald, which was a fine experience anyway. They did their very best to help me fit my banjo, and when the item didn't work out, they accepted my return without a problem, and refunded my money.
Still a great place to do business.

I installed this Waverley tuner on a Fairbanks Whyte Laydie. It is so easy now to tune that fifth string!

This Waverly is an awesome 5th string tuning peg that replaced a shot friction peg on my 4-decade-old Aria banjo. I purchased the peg hole reamer from Stew Mac to do this job correctly, and the installation looks sweet. The Waverly peg works as smooth as butter and holds tune like I haven't experienced in years. I highly recommend this Waverly 5th string peg.

If you're going to do this job for the first time, I recommend getting the reamer to do it right. Stew-Mac has plenty of information to digest to do this task correctly, and if you follow the instructions and tips, your finished product will look like a professional luthier did the work.

Recently, I built a banjo for a left handed customer but, I didn't want to merely turn a standard (right handed) 5th string tuner around. The Waverly planetary 5th string machine was a perfect solution. I replaced the the standard ivoroid button with a 5 Star type pearl button and it matches perfectly with the rest of the 5 Star machines.
