T-Style Electric Guitar Kit

I've got to say I was a bit sceptical about ordering this kit. It seemed there were a few hurdles to overcome. First, being in Australia I had never dealt with StewMac before. Sure I saw the site and surfed all over it but when the time came to provide credit card details, my palms did get a bit clammy. Second was the trip the kit had to take from where it was picked up, Columbus-West, OH - US of A all the way to my home in Glenroy, Victoria Australia. Finally would the quality live up to the claims as advertised. Well I had no need to worry. Fortunately the 'worry time' was so short. Order placed on Sunday 25 Feb Aus. time, kit received Thursday 01 March also Aus. time. Handling of payment and receipt exceptional, professional and trustworthy. Quality of kit, outstanding. The problem I have now is I've got to do it justice, in it's assembly and finish. This is my first kit, but somehow I feel like StewMac has my back covered and I can rely on their support if or when I need it. Thanks StewMac I'm glad I decided to go down the path of guitar making (even if it is with a kit).

Great sound at a fantastic price.

Great guitar at a very reasonable price. I was amazed at how easily the guitar went together; in fact, I was hoping to have to work harder! Better sound then my Stratocaster--owing to the quality of the parts, rather than the ham-handed assembler. Mahogany body is beautiful--I decided to go with a clear (stained) finish, lots of compliments at last night's gig. Looking forward to the next kit! (Maybe an arch top?)

The kit seems fine, I haven’t started on it yet but plan to start in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately the box was badly damaged, but I took out the body and neck and they seem OK. I will take pictures and post them when I start : ) .

Great first time build–recommended.

I purchased this kit on Black Friday having never built a guitar and I’m very pleased with the final product.

Here are my thoughts:

- The wood for the body. My three-piece body came glued up with glue/seems that were not parallel to the neck. So any final finishing where you wanted to highlight the wood grain was out of the question. I ended up painting mine surf green and I am very pleased with the results. If you’re thinking about a finish that highlights the wood, this is not the kit.

- Strings terminate at the bridge, not through the body. Not the end of the world, but something to consider.

- Bridge pick-up pocket small. I used Fender noiseless pickups. This meant enlarging the bridge cavity. It also meant running a ground to the bridge. It would be nice if the instructions mentioned why you would need to ground the bridge–with the kit pickup, grounding is not necessary. The kit actually includes a grounding wire and the instructions say to clip it off. It would be nice to know why that wire is there.

- Neck and frets. This portion of the kit was great and the neck fit snugly in the body–very nice. It was difficult to tell if the neck needed all the work the instructions called for—I did it anyway and I’m really happy with how it turned out. It sure looked like the neck was ready to go right out of the box. The neck has a 16” radius—pretty flat. Not bad, just something to consider.

- My instructions included a wiring diagram that was incorrect. I had to use my multimeter to see which terminals to solder to on the switch as the middle position produced no sound from the bridge pick-up.

- I made a few upgrades: The noiseless pickups mentioned above, pearl pick guard, new bridge that allowed of individual string set-up and Fender locking tuners.

All said and done this was a lot of fun. The kit is complete and the StewMac folks were happy to answer the few questions I had.

Basic kit, great for the first-time builder.

It comes as a routed body blank and a fretted neck, along with the essential hardware. Other than cutting out the head stock shape, it's really a good lesson in preparing, finishing and assembling a Tele style electric. A great place to start if your interested in building your own!

Nice wood and frets

This kit was a steal, so I bought it. I knew from the start that I would modify things, but I wanted to see what I had before I finalized my plans.

The Good – The wood is nice and well shaped and sanded. The frets are particularly well done for a kit in this price range, way better than average.

The Not So Good – I'm no impressed with the consistency / accuracy of holes drilled for the tuners nor the neck plate. I feel like most of the components are sub-par, but that was okay for me as I wasn't really planning on using most of them. But be aware that if you want to use other parts, you will need to modify the body. I had to open up the routes for the bridge pickup and the controls, and I had to drill string-thru holes for a traditional Tele bridge. Not a particularly hard job, but another step that is required.

Mine is still in-progress, but it will be an vintage semi-relic'd Esquire when completed. I'll post photos when done.
